Singapore is the most liveable city for Asian expats for 14 years in a row according to a new survey by ECA International, a human resources consultancy. The factors that were mentioned as having contributed to Singapore’s top ranking include “access to great facilities, a low crime rate, good quality healthcare and education”. The survey also listed the fact that there was already a large expat population living in Singapore.
In the same survey, Hong Kong fell 12 places to joint 41st position. Part of the reason for the fall was the damage caused by Typhoon Mangkhut in September of 2018. In contrast, major Chinese cities such as Beijing, Nanjing and Xiamen have improved in their rankings, due mainly to improvements made to their infrastructure and the introduction of measures to combat air pollution. Thailand’s Bangkok was ranked 89th, while Malaysia’s George Town and Kuala Lumpur were ranked 97th and 98th respectively.
