Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has unveiled plans to expand the current mass rapid transit (MRT) rail network. Two new stations, Brickland station and Sungei Kadut station, will be added to the North-South line by mid-2030. Located between Choa Chu Kang and Bukit Gombak stations, Brickland station will cater to residents from Keat Hong to the Brickland District in Tengah, while Sungei Kadut station will be added between Yew Tee and Kranji stations, connecting residents to the upcoming Sungei Kadut industrial zone.
In addition, Sungei Kadut will also serve as an interchange station connected to the Downtown Line (DTL) extending from Bukit Panjang Station. This effectively cuts travel time from the North-West to the downtown region by up to 30 minutes. By 2040, LTA aims to cut travel times down to 45minutes or less during peak hour travels to city centres or 20 mins to nearest neighbourhood centres.
It was also announced that the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) will be extended to serve the future Terminal 5 at Changi Airport By 2040. Tanah Merah will also be converted to serve as an interchange station connecting TEL and the East-West Line (EWL). Commuters will be able to travel directly from the airport via TEL to the future Woodlands North station, where they can transfer to the Singapore-Johor Bahru Rapid Transit System Link, if the project goes ahead.
Similarly, the Cross-Island (CRL) was also announced and it will connect Changi to Sin Ming by 2029 and extend to Punggol by 2031. When fully operational, it will connect Changi to Jurong. This is to support the future regional employment centres such as Woodlands Regional Centre, Punggol Digital District, Jurong Innovation District and Jurong Lake District, by shortening travel time, creating greater mobility and bringing jobs closer to home.
The Government will be conducting a feasibility study to assess the need for a new line to support the north and north-eastern region transportation needs. The line is to connect the north to the south by 2040, from the upcoming Woodlands North Coast residential development to the Greater Southern Waterfront, cutting commute time by 40 minutes.
